SPHERICS TO RECEIVE “NOVEL APPROACHES IN ORAL DRUG DELIVERY” AWARD AT THE CONTROLLED RELEASE SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING

Lincoln, RI, June 15, 2005 - Spherics Inc. announced today it will receive an award for “Novel Approaches to Oral Drug Delivery” for research to be presented at the upcoming annual meeting of the Controlled Release Society. The award, for preclinical studies of a controlled release tablet formulation of the antifungal drug itraconazole, will be received by Spherics’ Director of Research and Development, Jules Jacob. In addition, Mr. Jacob will be making four presentations at the meeting. The studies being presented demonstrate significant enhancement in the oral biovailability of three different marketed drugs, providing strong preclinical and clinical proof-of-concept for Spherics’oral drug delivery technology platform.

The Controlled Release Society and Eurand sponsor the award. The Society’s 32nd annual meeting will be held June 18-22, in Miami, Florida.

“This award, by the leading drug delivery organization, validates our approach to developing improved products with our novel oral drug delivery platform,” said Ze’ev Shaked, PhD, President and CEO of Spherics. “Itraconazole is a particularly challenging drug, as its absorption can vary widely due to poor solubility. The award recognizes the novel concepts used to design once-a-day, oral formulation that significantly reduces variability and maintains effective plasma concentrations of the drug over an extended duration.”

The award winning study will be presented Wednesday, June 22, 10:30 AM at the “Eurand Special Session” in Fontainebleau C. The study is entitled, “Pharmacokinetics of Bioadhesive, Gastroretentive, Controlled Release Tablets of Itraconazole (Spherazole™ CR) in a Beagle Dog Model.”

At the meeting Mr. Jacob will also present results of the additional proof-of-concept studies conducted to validate Spherics’ core technologies. The studies include:

  • “Single-Dose Pharmacokinetics of Bioadhesive Itraconazole Tablets (Spherazole™) in Healthy Volunteers, Poster 770, Poster Session 2”, Tuesday, June 21-Wednesday, June 22.
  • “Pharmacokinetics of Bioadhesive Gastroretentive Controlled Release Tablets of Acyclovir (BioVir™ CR) in Beagle Dog Model” Tuesday, June 21 at 10:15 AM at the “New Strategies in Oral Drug Delivery”
  • “Schedule of Dose Adjustments for Improved Bioavailability of an Oral Repeat-Dose Paclitaxel Nanoparticle Formulation” Tuesday, June 21 at 9:45 AM at the “Advanced Drug Delivery for Cancer Therapy” Session in Fontainebleau C.
The Controlled Release Society (CRS) is an international organization which serves 3,000 members from more than 50 countries. Two-thirds of the CRS membership represents industry and one-third represents academia and government.
